Choosing Between 18 Karat and 22 Karat Gold Chains

Wait… 22 Karat is a thing? I thought it didn’t go above 14 Karat? What is a Karat anyways? Here at JBC Gems, we’ve heard it all. When it comes to choosing a gold chain, there are truly many options. Yellow or White? Ice or no Ice? While we could turn this post into a Harry Potter Series in length (please don’t sue us, can’t go through that nonsense again…) so for this article we are going to focus on just two main karats: 18 karat and 22 karat. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to weigh them carefully before making a decision.

18 Karat Gold Chains

18 karat gold chains are made up of 75% gold and 25% other metals, such as silver or copper. This makes them more affordable than 22 karat gold chains, while still being durable and long-lasting. Additionally, 18 karat gold chains are less likely to tarnish than 22 karat gold chains, making them a good choice for people who are active or who live in humid climates.

22 Karat Gold Chains

22 karat gold chains are made up of 91.67% gold and 8.33% other metals. This makes them more yellow and have a richer color than 18 karat gold chains. Additionally, 22 karat gold chains are more durable and less likely to tarnish than 18 karat gold chains. However, they are also more expensive and more likely to scratch and dent.

Which Karat is Right for You?

The best karat for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are on a tight budget, an 18 karat gold chain may be the right choice for you. If you prefer a more yellow gold color, a 22 karat gold chain may be a better choice. If you are more active or live in a humid climate, an 18 karat gold chain may be a better choice. Ultimately, the best way to choose the right gold chain for you is to try on a few different chains and see what you like best.

Some suggestions when buying a gold chain:

Consider your budget: If you are on a tight budget, an 18 karat gold chain may be a better option for you. If you can afford it, a 22 karat gold chain may be a better choice.

Consider your lifestyle: If you are active and likely to get your chain scratched or dented, an 18 karat gold chain may be a better option. If you save your jewelry for special occassions, a 22 karat gold chain may be a better choice.

Consider your personal style: If you prefer a more yellow gold color, a 22 karat gold chain may be a better option. If you prefer a slightly whiter gold, an 18 karat gold chain may be a better choice.

Buy from a reputable dealer: When buying a gold chain, it is important to buy from a reputable dealer. A reputable dealer either tests or purchases through legitimate sources. A lot of times these are connections that are built over decades, not days. Buying through reputable dealers will ensure that you are getting a quality product that is not counterfeit. Here at JBC Gems we follow these guidelines to ensure you receive a product you’ll love and want to keep for generations.
